How we use it
- To answer messages and act on corrections and news tips.
- To understand which pages readers find useful, using Google Analytics in aggregate.
- To show display ads through Google AdSense, which pay for the site.
- To protect the site from spam, abuse and security threats.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for any purpose other than those above without asking you first.
Service providers
We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:
- Google Analytics (Google): visit statistics.
- Google AdSense (Google): display advertising. Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can manage personalized ads at adssettings.google.com. Google explains its use of data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Akismet (Automattic): spam filtering for comments.
- Our web host: stores the site and its server logs.
Some of these providers store data outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law.
Cookies and your consent
A cookie banner lets you accept or refuse statistics and marketing cookies. Where the law requires consent, including in Quebec, those cookies are not set until you accept. You can change your choice at any time with the cookie settings button on the site. Details are in our Cookie Policy.
Newsletter
If we launch an email newsletter, you will only receive it if you sign up. Every issue will identify the sender and include a working unsubscribe link, as Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) requires.
How long we keep it
We keep contact messages only as long as needed to deal with them, and no longer than two years. Analytics and advertising data are kept according to Google’s own retention settings.
Security
The site uses an encrypted connection (HTTPS). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your rights
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, and you may withdraw your consent at any time. Send your request through our contact form. We will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or, in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information.

The site is a general-audience guide. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
